History of Technology in English

Overhead Projectors: Bringing the big picture to a classroom near you since the 1950's.

  1. Alex, I completely agree that an overhead projector is an important tool in an English classroom. Not only can you project literature and other texts onto a larger screen, but you can also model various techniques, such as how to be an "active reader". It's also interesting to think about how overhead projectors have remained relatively the same since their creation in the 50s.

  2. Alex,
In all my Language Arts classes in middle school I remember my teachers using an overhead projector. Like Julie mentioned, it is a great way of modeling to the student what you expect of them. Especially with handouts. You can make a transparency version of it and fill it out as you go. This way the students can visually see how you are organizing your answers. And for those students who are slower paced, it's projected on the screen so they can take their time. Even though overhead projectors have been around since the 50's, they are kind of timeless. Especially for districts who can't afford new technology, this is a good way of projecting.

  3. Overhead projectors are great! They are pretty reliable, and rarely break. You just plus it in, turn it on, and you can present papers or whatever you want in minutes. Overhead projectors are timeless because even though they have been around for 60 years, they are still great and work in the same way. If we are using the same technology 50-60 years later, obviously they did something right.
